What Do I Actually Need for My Baby (and Myself)? A Doula’s Real-World Guide
In all my years as a caregiver and doula, one thing has stayed the same—new parents are overwhelmed by all the stuff. There’s so much out there, it’s hard to know where to start. What do you really need? What’s just hype? Let’s break it down, heart-to-heart.
Think of this as your no-fluff, real-deal starter guide for building a baby registry that supports both your baby’s needs and your postpartum healing.
For Baby: The Essentials (and Then Some)
Let’s start with the basics:
-
Diapers & Wipes – You’ll go through more than you think, so stock up.
-
Onesies & Sleepers – Soft, breathable, and easy to wash. (Pro tip: zippers > snaps at 3AM.)
-
Burp Cloths & Swaddles – Trust me, you’ll want more than you think.
-
Nail Clippers or a File – Those tiny claws? Surprisingly sharp.
-
A Safe Place to Sleep – Whether it’s a bassinet or crib, make sure it has a firm mattress and a fitted sheet only.
-
Bottles (if bottle or combo feeding) – Start small and see what baby prefers.
Nice to Have
-
A white noise machine
-
A wrap or baby carrier for hands-free snuggles
-
A stroller and infant car seat (some hospitals won’t let you leave without one)
For You: Because Mama Needs Care, Too
This is where folks often forget—but you matter just as much.
-
Postpartum Pads & Mesh Undies – Don’t skimp. You’ll need them.
-
Peri Bottle – A must-have for those early healing days.
-
Nipple Balm – Whether breastfeeding, pumping, or combo feeding, comfort matters.
-
Nursing Bras or Tanks – Go for comfort, not cost. You don’t need a $70 bra to feel supported.
-
Hydration Station – Big water bottle, high-protein snacks, lip balm, and a charger within reach. Rest, recovery, and snacks—that’s my motto.
-
Support – Whether it’s a postpartum doula (hey, that’s me 💁🏽♀️), a lactation consultant, or a friend who shows up and holds space—don’t be afraid to ask for help.
What You Don’t Really Need (Right Away)
-
The Pump Supreme 3000 – Unless you’re exclusively pumping, hold off. Many insurances cover a perfectly good pump.
-
Designer Baby Clothes – Adorable, sure, but babies grow fast.
-
Tons of Toys – Right now, you’re their favorite everything.
-
All the Fancy Gear – If space or budget is tight, skip the gadgets. What babies really need is love, warmth, and your responsiveness.
Final Thoughts
There’s a lot out there—and it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. My advice? Focus on what supports connection, bonding, and healing. The rest will come with time and experience.
To make it easier, I created an Amazon Storefront with all the must-haves: my favorites, my clients’ go-to picks, and a few cute extras that don’t break the bank. If you’re a shopper like me, by all means grab that toy or splurge on the cute diaper bag—but if you want to cover the essentials without the guesswork, take a peek at what a doula and baby-care expert really recommends.
